Tulips - In Classic Style

RoozenGaarde, Skagit Valley, Washington State, USA

On the first day of spring, most folks think of improved whether ahead . . . and tulips. Simple in bloom, bold in color, tulips are one of the world’s most popular flowers. When one thinks of tulips, an image of The Netherlands would most likely come to mind—perhaps with a windmill in the background. However, if one types the address www.tulips.com in their browser search bar, a company website from the United States pops up.

The Roozen family established RoozenGaarde in 1985 with Washington Bulb Company in the Skagit Valley of Washington State, cultivating tulips and bulbs in Holland and the United States since the early 1700’s. The Roozen family business of growing tulips, daffodils and irises is the largest in the world, covering more than 1000 acres of field blooms and 16 acres of greenhouses. RoozenGaarde ships thousands of bulbs each autumn and fresh-cut flowers are available for purchase or for shipment year-round. During the spring season, RoozenGaarde supplies an online Bloom Map to obtain the most reliable and up-to-date bloom information.

Located on the property, RoozenGaarde has a picturesque 3½-acre display garden that is planted with over a quarter million bulbs and features an authentic Dutch windmill. Each fall, the show garden is planted with over three hundred thousand spring-flowering bulbs, providing a gorgeous display of color during the early weeks of spring. Great photo opportunities abound in the garden and the adjacent 15-acre tulip field.

RoozenGaarde is an official Sponsor of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival that has evolved into one of the most popular destination events for the Pacific Northwest. As with all things governed by Mother Nature, the tulips bloom according to their own schedule sometime during the festival, which is held from April 1st-30th.. Every spring hundreds of thousands of people come to enjoy the celebration of spring as millions of tulips burst into bloom. If you happen to be in the Northwest portion of the United States this April, we suggest a trip to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival to celebrate the arrival of spring.

  1. Lovely story and images of the tulips. How welcome on this, the first day of spring, legally, despite the icy sidewalks in Boston. As a photographer who has spent a good bit of time capturing floral beauty, I am again humbled by the staggering variety and beauty which the DNA on this planet offers up, seemingly endlessly

Lovely comments Russ – thank you for writing. So glad you are humbled with earth’s floral beauty . . . while the ice is humbling every Bostonian. Hopefully the tulips will be in full New England bloom shortly.

    Thanks Carl,
