Are you a fan of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Classic? This highest regarded television series in history soared to popularity in its first two seasons with enthusiastic followers from around the world. Already airing in the U.K., Season 3 begins airing in the United States this Sunday, January 6th.
The amusing, spot-on delivery of Dame Maggie Smith’s lines played a large role in the show’s increasing popularity. Now, devotees of Downton Abbey eagerly await the season opener. Shirley Maclaine joins the cast as the American diva who visits her daughter – Lady of the Manor – played by Elizabeth McGovern.
The Downton Abbey series is recognized for portraying historical nobility and the operation of grand homes — the servants and those they serve — of the early twentieth century. What makes this show marvelous is the way in which the upstairs and downstairs occupants interact; all know their duties, but a warm-hearted concern and respect for one another replaces the typical servitude that encompasses other shows of similar theme.
The home and 1000-acre country estate used in the filming of Downton Abbey is Highclere Castle, located in Hampshire, England, 5 miles south of Newbury. Since 1679, the castle has been home to the Carnarvon Family. Sir Charles Barry renovated the mansion in 1839 after he had completed the House of Parliament in London. Faced in Bath stone, the home is of Jacobethan style, the meaning of which refers to the Victorian revival of English architecture of the late 16th and early 17th century, when Tudor architecture was challenged by newly arrived Renaissance influences. Barry described the style of Highclere as “Anglo-Italian” — with the Italian Renaissance theme more evident in the interiors.
Any interest in living the life of the Carnarvon family? Highclere Castle of today is available for weddings, social occasions, and corporate meetings. Situated midway between London and Bristol, Oxford and Southampton, Highclere is a convenient and exclusive entertaining and business option for private events.
