There are those who design and entertain … and there are those who design and entertain in classic style.  Ian Schrager has achieved international recognition for concepts that have revolutionized the entertainment, residential and hospitality industries. My own home and business include Schrager-esque elements – just look at every chic hotel in South Beach and you will see Schrager’s influence. First, there was Studio 54 in the 70’s, which Mr. Schrager co-founded with his late business partner, Steve Rubell. Then the pair turned their attention to the hotel industry with the 1984 opening of Morgans Hotel on Madison Avenue in New York, introducing the concept of “boutique hotel” to the world. The Royalton and Paramount Hotels, both in Manhattan, followed with “lobby socializing” that became the new urban gathering spot for those who wanted a stylish and sophisticated environment. Next came the hotel-as-lifestyle urban resorts: Delano in Miami, Mondrian in West Hollywood, Hudson in New York, Clift in San Francisco, and St. Martins Lane & Sanderson Hotels in London. Whenever visiting these cities, a Morgans Group hotel was always my go-to for discovering the new hotspots. In 2005, Schrager sold Morgans Hotel Group. Since then, he has transformed the fabled Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City and is currently working on two new hotel brands – the first of which is Public Chicago.

For his Public concept, Mr. Schrager takes the best from the luxury segment, boutique hotels and select services and creates a new genre of hotel where each aspect is thought out, transformed and updated. At Public, service matters most. But the key point of differentiation is in the kind and quality of services it offers. The brand will only offer services that matter, those that guests really want and need, rather than an array of superfluous services they do not use.

Public Chicago completely transforms the Gold Coast’s famed Ambassador East Hotel and its historic Pump Room Restaurant. Rich with a cultural heritage that spanned decades, the guests inhabited the Pump Room to see and be seen. In its current re-imagined state, the Pump Room offers updated classics by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and is once again the fashionable dining spot that it was intended to be. At night, the restaurant’s bar transforms into a supper club recapturing the glamour of the 30′s and 40′s with a modern twist.

Ian Schrager has done it again. By developing a new and improved social experience for sophisticated hotel, dining, and lounge options, Ian is still on the cutting edge. Chicago is fortunate to be the first recipient of this new and improved classic Schrager style.
