One of my favourite ski resort areas in the Western Hemisphere is Sun Valley, Idaho. Bald Mountain stands majestically above the old-west style town of Ketchum, with ski trails visibly appearing to cascade off the peak like silky white ribbons. What differentiates the terrain here is that the total vertical drop of 3400 feet (1036 M) can be tackled top to bottom in one fell swoop, with an abundance of varying degrees of idyllic pitch—followed by a quick eight-minute lift right back to the top. Many ski resorts offer segmented areas of good pitch, but too much flat terrain where the skier is transiting from one skiable area to the next. With a summit of 9150 feet (2789 m) and a climate that lives up to its name, Sun Valley—the first ski resort in America—now qualifies as a world-class year-round recreation area.
If you plan to visit Sun Valley (which refers to the towns of Ketchum and the smaller incorporated resort town of Sun Valley) and are looking for accommodations, look no further than Knob Bill Inn. This lovely boutique hotel is gracious, handsome and well constructed. You know that accommodations will be great when you hear the gentle thump of the closing of the door and you take note of the generously-sized guestrooms that are well appointed.
European in style, design and charm, Knob Hill Inn depicts a Swiss chalet, with stunning views of the surrounding Sawtooth and Boulder Mountain Ranges from both rooms and public spaces. Dining tables at The Grill at Knob Hill Inn spill out onto the flowering patio in warmer months.
Knob Hill Inn fits the bill in its hotel amenities package: complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi, heated pool, hot tub, sauna, boot warmers and complimentary shuttle service to base lodges. My stay there could not have been more delightful—the staff was knowledgeable and gracious, and the food was well presented and tasty. When returning to the hotel after dining in town one evening, freshly baked cookies greeted me. When looking for hotel options in Sun Valley, my recommendation is that you snowshoe yourself right to the Knob Hill Inn for classic European style.
Happy skiing, snowboarding and hiking,
P.S. Before you go, be sure to watch the 1941 classic, SUN VALLEY SERENADE, starring Sonja Henie.
