What is your Sunday morning ritual? Mine happens to be classical music performed by up-and-coming musical artists. Currently in its thirteenth year, FROM THE TOP on NPR is hosted by famed artist, pianist and media personality Christopher O’Riley and is one of the most popular weekly music series on public radio, heralded as “contemporary culture’s feel-good success story” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Based in Boston, FROM THE TOP is an independent non-profit organization – founded by New England Conservatory and originally promoted by PBS station WGBH – that celebrates the power of music in the hands of extraordinary young people. As the preeminent showcase for young musicians, FROM THE TOP reaches more than one million people each year and shines a light on diverse young people ages 8 to 18 by sharing their stories and performances, providing scholarships, and engaging them as leaders in national broadcasts, live concerts and outreach events across the country and around the world. Since 2005, this program has awarded more than $1.6 million to pre-collegiate musicians with financial need to support their musical development.

Walking out onto a stage in front of an audience, aware that you will be heard by hundreds of thousands of listeners, can be daunting. Mr. O’Riley eases the moment by first introducing each young musician, which usually elicits an amusing anecdote that provides for a light-hearted repartee before the pressure of the performance begins. Then the music flows … and goose bumps rise.

Televised for two seasons at Carnegie Hall for television, the following YouTube video depicts the excitement, nervousness and playful mutual admirations of the participants. Hopefully you too will experience the musical passion of these gifted young musicians in classic style on FROM THE TOP.

Just returning from Beijing, California, Texas and Florida, FROM THE TOP will be taped live at Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory in Boston one month from today and moves one to a location near you.
