Operations beginning in 2002 and helmed by Founder & CEO Sam Nazarian, sbe has established a thriving collection of hotels, restaurants, nightlife and real estate groups. With this week’s unveiling of the SLS Hotel South Beach, the highly anticipated encore to the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, sbe ushers in Philippe Starck’s long-awaited return to South Beach.
Sam Nazarian and Phillipe Starck have transformed the shell of the old Ritz-Plaza at 17th and Collins Avenue into a posh new hotel to compete with the likes of The Standard, Shore Club, W South Beach, Mondrian and Delano Hotels – all nearby. Ironically, Phillipe Starck made a huge splash on Miami Beach in 1994 with his design of the Delano Hotel … directly across the street from SLS Hotel.
Pulling off a Starck design while keeping the integrity of the historical art deco area led to many delays, not to mention the less-than-wonderful economy; but SLS Hotel finally opened this past week. Several well-known celebrities have partnered up with SLS:
The Bazaar, the world-renowned restaurant by James Beard award-winning Chef José Andrés, makes its East Coast debut with a blend of sophisticated cuisine and playful indoor and outdoor lounge spaces. A story in contrasts, The Bazaar menu blends tradition and ingenuity in true Spanish style mixed with influences from South Beach’s local Latin flavors. Jose Andres’ first food truck designed by Philippe Starck and a Latin graffiti artist will sit poolside.
Katsuya by Starck South Beach infuses traditional Japanese cuisine with a provocative twist. Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi unleashes his culinary artistry onto South Beach with a menu of innovative sushi and robata dishes. The restaurant also features the Dragon Room, an intimate mezzanine lounge, showcasing Katsuya’s award-winning mixology program.
The Philippe Starck-designed Salon at the SLS Hotel South Beach will offer pampering for the body and soul. The salon will direct a highly intuitive and personalized experience in a soothing, yet playful, setting. Reminiscent of a celestial dreamscape, guests will feel relaxed and at ease among the warm white tones and billowing curtains throughout the space.
Grand opening parties are planned for the Salon tonight and The Bazaar next Tuesday. If SLS Hotel Miami Beach mirrors Phillipe Stark’s other projects, then sun and fun worshippers will have another glamorous destination to holiday, in classic style, in South Beach
