A few weeks ago, ‘twas the season of celebration – which triggers the headaches and stress that comes along with planning and execution of holiday entertaining. Now, ‘tis the season for relaxation and rejuvenation. Looking for snow? Head to Sun Valley or Kitzbühel. Looking for sand? Head to the Caribbean. The island of St-Martin/St Maarten is divided roughly 60/40 between the French/Dutch sides, a division dating back to 1648. Today, the island is populated by a diverse and growing group. Traffic is at times a curious adventure, and I loved visiting my favorite area of the island: the charming town of Grand Case. Often referred to as the Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean, Grand Case is on the quieter northwestern coastline of the French side of the island. I recently learned of the Hotel L’Esplanade, a lovely boutique hotel in Grand Case, from my friend Manoj Alwani. His family has owned Little Europe Jewelers on the island for over three decades. Manoj raved about this hotel, as do most guests who post their experience online.

Overlooking the bay of Grand Case, Hotel L’Esplanade is situated on a hill as you enter the quaint fishing village. Each room at L’Esplanade has a private terrace draped with bright bougainvillea overlooking the turquoise water of the Caribbean. A walk down a delightful little footpath leads you to the sandy white beach in just a few minutes; or, perhaps you might prefer the hotel pool with swim-up bar. Owners Kristin and March Petrelluzzi offer spacious studios, lofts and suites with Balinese hardwood furniture, comfy bathrooms, and a luxurious ambiance that is unpretentious, homey and not touristy. L’Esplanade is on my bucket list for its serene garden setting away from the crowds of St. Martin, yet just a short walk to the Caribbean’s Restaurant Row.
